At least 40 people are feared missing after a boat carrying more than 50 passengers capsized on Sunday morning in Sokoto State. The National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) confirmed the incident, which occurred while passengers were en route to Goronyo Market.
According to a 9am News report, NEMA stated that about 10 people have so far been rescued, while search and rescue operations are ongoing for the remaining passengers.
Boat accidents are a recurring tragedy on Nigeria’s waterways, often linked to overcrowding, poor maintenance, and lack of proper regulation. The annual rainy season worsens the risks, as rivers and lakes frequently overflow their banks.
This latest mishap follows a troubling pattern:
- In August 2024, at least 16 farmers died in Sokoto State when a canoe carrying them to their rice farms capsized.
- In May 2025, at least 27 lives were lost in Gbajibo, Kwara State, when a market boat overturned. That disaster came barely seven months after another accident in the same area claimed 100 lives.
- On July 29, 2025, six schoolgirls drowned in Jigawa State after a boat taking them home from farm work sank.
- Just two days earlier, 13 people died in another boat accident in Niger State.
Confirming Sunday’s tragedy, NEMA’s Director General, Mrs. Zubaida Umar, said the agency had activated its Sokoto Operations Office to coordinate with local authorities.
“As at the time of this report, about 10 persons have been rescued, while more than 40 passengers remain missing,” NEMA stated.
“Our team is working closely with emergency responders and local divers to intensify the search and rescue mission. The agency remains committed to saving lives and supporting affected families.”
The agency has promised to provide regular updates as rescue efforts continue.
This accident underscores Nigeria’s urgent need to improve water transport safety and strengthen regulations to prevent recurring tragedies on inland waterways.
