No fewer than four vessels carrying imported Premium Motor Spirit (PMS), also known as petrol, arrived at Nigerian seaports between Friday, October 18, and Sunday, October 20, according to findings by 9am News Nigeria. These shipments, amounting to 123.4 million litres of petrol, were berthed at seaports in Lagos and Calabar to bolster fuel supply nationwide.

Documents from the Nigerian Ports Authority revealed that the vessels docked at Apapa and Calabar seaports to meet the growing domestic demand for petrol with over 123million litres. The importation aligns with previous reports by The Punch that oil marketers were bringing in PMS to supplement supply from the $20bn Dangote Petroleum Refinery. The refinery is currently producing 10 million litres of petrol daily, significantly lower than its earlier commitment of 25 million litres.

The first vessel, carrying 35,000 metric tonnes of petrol, arrived at the Apapa port on Friday, followed by two more ships at the same port, bringing the total to 92,000 metric tonnes of imported PMS. With a conversion rate of 1,341 litres per metric tonne, this equates to around 123.4 million litres of petrol.

Marketers with approved import licenses are authorized to bring in PMS, but all products must undergo strict testing protocols by the Nigerian Midstream and Downstream Petroleum Regulatory Authority (NMDPRA) to ensure they meet the required standards before being released into the market.

This importation follows a previous batch of 141 million litres in September, also reported by 9am News Nigeria, as oil marketers work to stabilize fuel prices and supply in the deregulated Nigerian market.
