In a major political shake-up, more than 12,000 members of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and Advanced Congress of Democrats (ACD) have defected to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) in Niger State, 9am News reports.
The defection, led by former ACD gubernatorial candidate Bello Bwari, took place at the APC secretariat in Minna, where party executives officially welcomed the new members. The move is seen as a significant boost to the APC’s grassroots strength ahead of the 2027 general elections.
Speaking to the media, Bwari addressed ongoing rumors about his potential appointment as Deputy Governor amid reported tensions between Governor Umaru Bago and his current deputy.
“If the opportunity arises, I would accept it with gratitude and faith,” he stated, while reiterating his commitment to the party’s vision.
Similarly, Sani Kutigi, a former House of Representatives member and 2023 PDP gubernatorial aspirant, explained that their defection reflects their recognition of the developmental strides achieved by the current administration.
“We are aligning with a vision that mirrors our aspirations for the state,” Kutigi said.
APC State Secretary Adamu Gani welcomed the defectors warmly, emphasizing the party’s commitment to inclusivity despite concerns about overcrowding.
“We remain open to all who share our mission, regardless of the numbers,” he assured.
In response to the swirling rumors of a rift within his administration, Governor Umaru Bago dismissed claims of discord, affirming that his relationship with his deputy remains strong.
“We are united, and no one can break us,” the governor declared.
This latest wave of defections underscores the deepening political realignments in Niger State, with analysts suggesting that more shifts are likely as the 2027 elections draw closer.
