The All Progressives Congress (APC) has strongly condemned Osun State Governor Ademola Adeleke for allegedly violating his oath of office and disregarding the rule of law by conducting a local government election on Saturday, February 22, 2025.

In a statement issued on Sunday, APC National Publicity Secretary Felix Morka described Adeleke’s actions as a “wanton disregard for the rule of law” and a direct violation of the February 10, 2025, ruling of the Court of Appeal.

The APC argued that the election should not have taken place, given that the Court of Appeal had earlier reinstated the previously sacked local government officials.

“In its judgment, the Court of Appeal nullified the ruling of the Federal High Court and reinstated the sacked local government officials until the expiration of their term in October 2025. That is the valid, subsisting, and binding legal position on the matter,” Morka stated.

The party also criticized Governor Adeleke’s appointment of caretaker committees following the removal of the local government officials in 2022. The APC described the move as illegal and a violation of Section 7(1) of the Nigerian Constitution, which guarantees a system of local government by democratically elected councils.

“Why is Governor Adeleke so desperate and determined to incite anarchy in Osun State with impunity?” the APC queried.

APC Dismisses LG Election as “Illegal and Unconstitutional”

The party labeled Saturday’s local government election as illegal, unconstitutional, and a blatant act of contempt against the judiciary. It further accused Governor Adeleke of:

  • Wasting public funds on an election that holds no legal standing.
  • Escalating political tensions in Osun State.
  • Undermining democratic institutions by disregarding a valid court ruling.

The APC urged Governor Adeleke to respect the Court of Appeal’s judgment and, if dissatisfied, seek redress at the Supreme Court.

“The democratic remedy available to Adeleke is to appeal to the Supreme Court rather than resort to illegalities,” Morka asserted.

The party also called on security agencies to ensure peace and order in Osun State while urging the Federal Government to withhold federal allocations from any illegally constituted local government administration.

“The people of Osun State deserve peace and constitutional order. Governor Adeleke must end his political infantilism and respect the rule of law,” the statement concluded.
