OPEC Appoints Nigeria’s Ademola Adeyemi-Bero as Chairman of Board of Governors for 2025

The Organization of Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC), has appointed Ademola Adeyemi-Bero, a Nigerian as Chairman of the its Board of Governors for year 2025. This event took place at OPEC’s 189th Ordinary Meeting which held via videoconference on Tuesday, December 10 2024.

The appointment of Nigeria’s Adeyemi-Bero is very consequential for Nigeria’s role in the global energy sector.

Adeyemi-Bero is the incumbent Governor of the Federal Republic of Nigeria for OPEC. He has over 38 years experience in the oil and gas sector. He is also the Chief Executive Officer of FIRST Exploration & Petroleum Development Company Limited (FIRST E&P), a Nigerian independent oil company.

A statement published on OPEC’s website stated that his appointment made earlier and then confirmed at the 189th Ordinary Meeting of the OPEC on Tuesday.

“The conference appointed Mr Ademola Adeyemi-Bero, Governor of the Federal Republic of Nigeria for OPEC, as Chairman of the Board of Governors for the year 2025, and Eng. Adeeb Al-Aama, Governor of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia for OPEC, as Alternate Chairman for the same period,”  OPEC’s statement made available to 9am News Nigeria read in part.

Nigerian Leadership in Energy

Nigeria’s Minister of State Petroleum Resources (Oil) Mr. Heineken Lokpobiri hailed the appointment as one that reaffirms Nigeria’s strong leadership in the global energy sector.

He said through this appointment Nigeria now has a vital platform to push for fairer and balanced energy policies that offer benefits to both oil producers, consumers, and the global economy.

The Minister also expressed gratitude to Mr. Gabriel Aduda, a former permanent secretary of Nigeria’s Ministry of Petroleum Resources and former outgoing Nigerian OPEC Governor, for his meritorious service.

Also he acknowledged Ambassador Aduda’s key role in pushing Nigeria’s interests within OPEC and ensuring the country’s influential presence in global energy discussions.

Other events that took place in OPEC’s 189th Ordinary Meeting is the extension of the tenure of Haitham Al Ghais as OPEC Secretary General for another three years and the appointment of Adeeb Al-Aama as Governor of Saudi Arabia for OPEC. He is the Alternate (deputy) Chairman of the Board of Governors for 2025.
