The Nigeria Women Football League (NWFL) has unveiled a ₦24.5 million prize pool for the ongoing 2025 NWFL Premiership Super 6, marking a significant financial uplift for all participating clubs and reinforcing the league’s efforts to professionalize women’s football in Nigeria.
According to the NWFL, the eventual champions will earn ₦10 million, consistent with the previous two editions. However, notable increases have been made to the rest of the prize structure. The runners-up will take home ₦6 million, and the third-place team will receive ₦4 million, each seeing a ₦1 million boost compared to last season.
In a more impactful move, the bottom three teams will each get ₦1.5 million, a sharp increase from the ₦500,000 previously awarded. This change underscores the league’s commitment to financial support and development at all levels of the competition.
NWFL Chairperson Nkechi Obi stated that the revised reward structure is an essential part of the league’s push toward full professionalization.
“This is a deliberate step to ensure that all clubs leave the NWFL Premiership Super 6 with something tangible,” she explained.
“By increasing the financial rewards, especially for the bottom three, we’re reinforcing our commitment to professionalizing the women’s game and encouraging more investment at club level.”
In addition to financial incentives, the champions of the 2025 NWFL Super 6 will also earn Nigeria’s sole ticket to the WAFU regional qualifiers for the CAF Women’s Champions League. A strong showing in that tournament could also see them qualify for the inaugural FIFA Women’s Club World Championship scheduled for next year.
As the 2025 season races to its climax on Saturday, May 17, four clubs Bayelsa Queens, defending champions Edo Queens, Nasarawa Amazons, and Super 6 debutants Remo Stars Ladies remain firmly in contention for the top prize.
According to a 9am News report, the competition has been one of the most tightly contested in recent years. Notably, each of the past four editions of the Super 6 finals has been won by a different club, increasing the stakes and anticipation heading into the final matchday.
The 2025 edition is broadcast live on StarTimes, with production by Team 33 Production, providing unprecedented visibility to the top tier of women’s football in Nigeria.
