Nottingham Forest manager Nuno Espirito Santo has thrown his full support behind strikers Taiwo Awoniyi and Chris Wood despite the club’s inability to sign another forward during the January transfer window, 9am news reports.

Awoniyi, who has struggled to find top form this season, was linked with a potential move away from the City Ground last month. However, Forest managed to keep Awoniyi and other key players while choosing not to reinforce their attack.

Speaking ahead of Tuesday night’s FA Cup tie against Exeter City, Nuno said:

“I think we are in a good place as a squad. As long as we keep ourselves healthy and work as good as we are working, I think we can compete until the end of the season.”

The Portuguese tactician admitted that the transfer window was quiet for most clubs and acknowledged the difficulty in securing new signings.

“It was a quiet window for all the clubs. It is always very difficult to operate and we were aware of that. We had a clear intention to retain the core of the squad. All the players are here and are available. We didn’t achieve what we wanted because it is very hard. We keep going.”

With Forest set for a crucial second half of the season, Nuno remains optimistic that his squad has the quality to push forward.
