In a recent interview on Arise TV, Doyin Okupe, former presidential aide to ex-President Goodluck Jonathan, confidently stated that Nigeria’s presidency will not return to the North in 2027. His comments addressed ongoing debates about the country’s power rotation framework and sectional politics.
Okupe highlighted the principle of rotational presidency between the North and South as a cornerstone of Nigeria’s political balance, emphasizing that deviating from this tradition risks stagnating the nation.
“We rotate between the North and the South. The North does eight years, at the end of which the South does eight years,” Okupe explained.
He further criticized the sectional interests driving political decisions, calling it one of Nigeria’s most fundamental problems. Okupe argued that previous leaders prioritized national interest over sectional interests, which he believes is vital for the country’s progress.
Presidency and 2027 Elections
While Okupe clarified that his stance does not guarantee Bola Tinubu’s re-election or the emergence of a specific Southern candidate, he was resolute about one thing:
“I say this authoritatively… In 2027, power cannot return to the North yet. That’s not how we do it.”
Okupe’s remarks have stirred debates across the political landscape, as discussions intensify about Nigeria’s leadership trajectory and adherence to the North-South power-sharing arrangement.
