For the third time in a week, Nigeria’s national grid collapsed once again on Saturday morning, October 19, 2024, disrupting power generation across the country. The latest collapse occurred at 8:16 AM, leading to a significant drop in power supply.

Earlier in the day, power generation had been recorded at 3,968 megawatts (MW) around 7 AM. However, by 9 AM, it had plummeted drastically to just 47MW, causing widespread blackouts. Power distribution companies (DisCos) reported receiving 0.00MW of power allocation following the collapse.

This marks the third national grid failure this week, with similar incidents occurring on Monday and Tuesday, during attempts to restore power after earlier outages. The exact cause of the repeated grid failures remains unclear, as officials from the Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) have yet to issue a statement.

Nigeria has faced persistent challenges with its power infrastructure, with grid collapses contributing to the country’s ongoing electricity supply issues. As the government and energy stakeholders work to address these problems, the frequent disruptions highlight the pressing need for structural reforms in Nigeria’s power sector.
