Nigerian troops foiled a reprisal attack by ISWAP and Boko Haram terrorists in Damboa, killing 34 insurgents and recovering weapons.
ISWAP Boko Haram Insurgents

The Nigerian Defence Headquarters has provided details on the January 4, 2025, terrorist attack on the Forward Operating Base in the Damboa Local Government Area of Borno State. The assault, orchestrated by Islamic State of West Africa Province (ISWAP) and Boko Haram insurgents, resulted in the tragic loss of six soldiers but ended with significant casualties inflicted on the attackers.

Maj. Gen. Edward Buba, Director of Defence Media Operations, confirmed that the terrorists carried out the attack as retaliation for the recent killing of their commanders and combatants by Nigerian forces.

Buba revealed that the insurgents, using motorcycles and gun trucks, attempted to ambush troops stationed at Sabon Gari village. However, their plans were thwarted by a patrol team returning to base. A subsequent reinforcement team, including members of the Civilian Joint Task Force, vigilantes, and hybrid forces, engaged the fleeing terrorists, despite encountering an Improvised Explosive Device (IED) that injured a Vigilante Commander.

The Air Component of Operation Hadin Kai further decimated the insurgents during their retreat, conducting precise air interdictions.

  • Terrorists killed: 34
  • Weapons recovered:
    • 23 AK-47 rifles
    • Over 200 rounds of 7.62mm ammunition
    • Additional military-grade weapons

While the terrorists suffered substantial losses, the Nigerian military mourned the loss of six brave soldiers. Maj. Gen. Buba confirmed that the names of the fallen personnel would remain confidential until their next of kin are notified.

Reaffirming the Armed Forces’ dedication, Buba stated, “Troops remain resolute in their mission to defeat insurgency and terrorism in the country.” He called for media cooperation in respecting the processes surrounding the notification of the families of the deceased.

This successful operation demonstrates the Nigerian military’s resilience and capacity to counter insurgency threats, even in the face of coordinated attacks by ISWAP and Boko Haram.
