Nigerian Governors Forum Pledge Collaboration on Constitutional Amendments and Education Reform

Kalu, who chairs the Committee on the Review of the Constitution, briefed the governors on the progress of the amendments, emphasizing the need for collaboration. During his address, Kalu proposed the establishment of a “one-stop shop” framework to align state-level priorities with the ongoing constitutional review process.

The NGF expressed strong support for this initiative, reaffirming their commitment to actively engage in shaping constitutional amendments that strengthen Nigeria’s democracy and governance.

Regional Engagement and Zonal Visitation

As part of the next steps in the constitutional amendment process, Deputy Speaker Benjamin Kalu revealed plans for regional and zonal visits to seek buy-in from the state houses of assemblies. These visits aim to ensure that the constitutional review process reflects the needs and aspirations of all Nigerians.

Collaboration on Education Reform

The governors also held discussions with Honourable Minister of Education, Tunji Alausa, on strategies to address Nigeria’s education challenges. The NGF expressed concern over issues such as out-of-school children and learning poverty, particularly in the North-East and North-West regions.

Key proposals discussed included:

  • Strengthening collaboration between federal and state governments.
  • Improving girl-child education.
  • Integrating vocational training into the educational system.
  • Using data and technology to improve education management systems.

The NGF reaffirmed its commitment to working with the Federal Government and development partners to achieve Sustainable Development Goal 4 (SDG4), which focuses on inclusive and quality education for all.

Addressing Tax Reforms and Insecurity

The governors also discussed the ongoing federal tax reforms, with plans to come up with a unified position. Additionally, they condemned the rising insecurity in the North-West and reiterated their commitment to collaborating with the Federal Government to tackle the security challenges affecting the country.
