In a recent report by Google, Nigerian software developers earned a massive $13 million (N20.8 billion) from Android applications in 2023. The report, titled ‘The Digital Opportunity of Nigeria’, highlighted that the Android software sector in the country also generated or supported around 25,000 jobs.
The report further noted that Nigerian Android developers claimed 1.86% of the total $700 million earned by Android developers in Sub-Saharan Africa, which has an estimated 500,000 developers. Nigeria, along with Kenya and South Africa, boasts about 50,000 Android developers each.
Google praised the significant role of its Android Operating System and Google Playstore in providing Nigerian developers with platforms to showcase their applications. With Android being the dominant operating system in Nigeria, developers can easily access a global market of 2.5 billion users, making over 140 billion downloads annually.
According to Olumide Balogun, West African Director at Google, the achievements of Nigerian developers are paving the way for more startups, including major players like Flutterwave, Chipper, and Paystack. Balogun highlighted that Google’s mobile services contributed around $1.8 billion to Nigeria’s economy in 2023.
