The Nigerian box office achieved a remarkable milestone in December 2024, grossing over ₦2.8 billion from more than 537,000 tickets sold. This marks the highest monthly revenue since December 2019, underscoring the growing influence of Nollywood and the resilience of Nigerian cinema.

Topping the box office charts was the blockbuster Everybody Loves Jenifa, which earned an impressive ₦1.035 billion by its third weekend. The film contributed ₦250 million in the final weekend of December alone. Other Nollywood successes included:

  • Mufasa, which added ₦267 million to the month’s tally.
  • Alakada: Bad & Boujee, grossing ₦205.3 million.

These figures reflect the increasing local demand for homegrown stories, with Nollywood solidifying its position as the driving force of the Nigerian film industry.

Hollywood titles also performed well, complementing Nollywood’s success.

  • Moana 2 grossed ₦358.3 million after five weeks.
  • Sonic 3 earned ₦70.6 million in its debut.

Boxing Day 2024 set a post-pandemic record, with 47,672 tickets sold, making it the third-highest single-day total in Nigerian cinema history. The achievement highlights the industry’s continued recovery and growing audience engagement.

Also, The box office boom aligns with supportive government initiatives like the ₦5 billion Creative Fund, which aims to bolster Nollywood’s capacity. With an average ticket price of ₦5,220, the December figures affirm Nollywood’s role as a cornerstone of Nigeria’s creative economy.

Meanwhile, With December’s success, industry analysts project that Nigerian cinema could surpass ₦10 billion in annual revenue. This milestone would further establish the sector’s importance in driving economic growth and promoting cultural storytelling.
