Nigeria has been thrown into mourning following the passing of Afenifere chieftain, Pa Ayo Adebanjo, at the age of 96. The elder statesman, nationalist, and advocate of true federalism died peacefully at his Lekki residence in Lagos on Friday, February 14, 2025.

In a statement, his family confirmed his death, describing him as a “foremost nationalist, elder statesman, distinguished lawyer, and apostle of true federalism.” The family added that funeral arrangements would be announced after consultations with his associates and interest groups.

National Tributes Pour In

The news of Adebanjo’s passing has elicited tributes from top political figures, including President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, former Presidents Olusegun Obasanjo and Muhammadu Buhari, state governors, and socio-political groups like Afenifere and the Coalition of United Political Parties (CUPP).

President Tinubu, in his condolence message, described Adebanjo’s death as an immense loss to Nigeria, noting his lifelong struggle for democracy, justice, and national unity.

“Nigeria has lost a political leader whose decades of unwavering struggle for justice, democracy, and national unity have left an indelible mark on our nation’s history,” Tinubu stated.

He highlighted Adebanjo’s role in Nigeria’s democratic struggles, particularly during the June 12, 1993, crisis, when he stood as a strong voice against military dictatorship through the National Democratic Coalition (NADECO).

Despite their later political differences, Tinubu affirmed his deep respect for Adebanjo, referring to him as “a father figure” who played a key role in his political journey.

Former President Muhammadu Buhari also expressed sadness, calling Adebanjo a rare political figure whose impact spanned law, politics, and socio-cultural activism. He extended condolences to the deceased’s family, the people of Ogun State, and all Nigerians.

Former President Olusegun Obasanjo, speaking from Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, where he is attending the 38th Ordinary Session of the African Union Assembly, described Adebanjo’s passing as a “huge personal loss.” He recalled his recent visit to Adebanjo on February 3, 2025, at his Lekki residence and expressed shock at his passing.

“His transition is, no doubt, a huge loss not only to me and to Ogun State but also to the country as a whole. He was a great man, a committed nationalist, and an effective representative of his people,” Obasanjo said.

Adebanjo’s Political Legacy

Pa Ayo Adebanjo was a staunch disciple of the late Chief Obafemi Awolowo and played a crucial role in Nigeria’s political evolution. He served as the Organizing Secretary of the Action Group in the First Republic and later contributed to the Unity Party of Nigeria during the Second Republic.

Throughout his lifetime, he remained a vocal advocate for true federalism, restructuring, and the advancement of Nigeria’s democratic principles. His influence in Afenifere helped shape Yoruba political ideology and contributed significantly to national political discourse.

Final Farewell

As Nigeria mourns one of its greatest political icons, Adebanjo’s legacy as a fighter for justice, democracy, and progressive governance remains a guiding light. His contributions to nation-building will continue to inspire future generations.
