The Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS) has announced an upward review of the cost of obtaining the Nigerian Standard Passport, with the new fees set to take effect from September 1, 2025.
According to a statement signed on Thursday by the Service Public Relations Officer, ACI AS Akinlabi, the reviewed charges apply only to passport applications made within Nigeria, while fees for Nigerians in the diaspora remain unchanged.
Under the new structure, applicants in Nigeria will now pay:
- N100,000 for the 32-page passport booklet with five-year validity.
- N200,000 for the 64-page passport booklet with ten-year validity.
For Nigerians abroad, the existing fees remain $150 for the 32-page, five-year booklet and $230 for the 64-page, ten-year booklet.
The Immigration Service explained that the adjustment was necessary to maintain the quality and integrity of the Nigerian passport while ensuring accessibility for citizens.
This development comes less than a year after a similar increase was introduced. In August 2024, the Federal Government approved an upward review that raised the 32-page passport from N35,000 to N50,000 and the 64-page passport from N70,000 to N100,000, effective September 1, 2024.
At the time, officials stressed that the adjustment was needed to sustain passport production quality and improve service delivery.
With the latest increment, the cost of Nigerian passports has nearly doubled within a year, a move that may likely spark fresh debate among citizens over affordability and accessibility.
