Nigeria Eyes Hosting 2030 Commonwealth Games – NOC

The Nigerian Olympic Committee confirms submission of interest to host the 2030 Commonwealth Games in Abuja, marking a bold step toward bringing the event to West Africa for the first time.

The Nigerian Olympic Committee (NOC) has officially confirmed it met the March 28, 2025 deadline to submit its expression of interest to host the 2030 Commonwealth Games, marking a significant milestone in Nigeria’s ambition to bring the global sporting event to Abuja, the nation’s capital.

According to NOC spokesperson Tony Nezianya, the submission lays the groundwork for what could be a historic moment the first time the Commonwealth Games are held in West Africa. However, for the bid to move forward, formal backing from the Federal Government is required. Without it, the process cannot proceed to the official bidding stage.

“Nigeria’s bid represents a compelling opportunity to showcase our nation’s progress, deepen our global reputation, and energize our domestic sports ecosystem,” the NOC statement read.

Building on Abuja’s Sporting Legacy

The last time Nigeria hosted a large-scale multi-sport event was the 8th All-Africa Games in 2003, also held in Abuja. That experience, the NOC believes, provides a solid foundation in logistics, infrastructure, and hospitality needed to host the Commonwealth Games. The capital city, with its expansive road network, sports facilities, and international airport, is seen as a suitable stage to meet the event’s requirements.

“This would also provide a compelling narrative for the nation’s progress and readiness,” Nezianya added.

Nigeria’s bid for the 2030 edition follows its unsuccessful attempt to host the 2014 Commonwealth Games, which it lost to Glasgow, Scotland. Ironically, Glasgow will again host the next edition of the Games from March 17 to 29, 2026, after Victoria, Australia, withdrew due to escalating costs.

The shift in hosts has reignited conversations around affordability and feasibility areas where Nigeria believes it can present innovative solutions rooted in sustainable infrastructure and strategic partnerships.

While the expression of interest signals intent, formal government endorsement is the next critical step. The NOC has yet to confirm whether it has secured official federal support, but insiders suggest lobbying efforts are already underway.

Hosting the Games could offer far-reaching benefits: job creation, tourism, international investment, and enhanced national pride. However, challenges remain from economic constraints to security and infrastructure upgrades.

The international sports community will now be watching to see if Nigeria can solidify its ambitions into a full-fledged bid. Should Abuja be selected, it would be the first African city to host the Commonwealth Games, placing Nigeria in the history books and offering a rare chance to redefine African sports leadership on the global stage.
