NCC will unveil simplified telecom tariff plans on December 13, 2024, limiting operators to seven plans to enhance transparency and fairness.
NCC Tariff plan

The Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) has announced that a new telecom tariff plan will be unveiled on December 13, 2024, after extensive consultations with stakeholders. The revised tariff structure is expected to enhance profitability in the sector, simplify the tariff system, and address consumer complaints about data depletion and transparency.

The announcement was made in Abuja on Thursday by the NCC’s Executive Vice-Chairman, Aminu Maida, who was represented by the Director of Public Affairs, Reuben Muoka.

Simplified Tariff Plans

To promote transparency and fairness, the NCC has directed telecom operators to limit their tariff and promotional plans to seven. This move aims to eliminate confusion caused by complex and overlapping plans while ensuring a fair competitive environment for operators.

In his statement, Maida noted:

“On December 13, 2024, a new tariff plan will be announced against the old date of October 27, as announced. We have gotten stakeholders to make inputs.”

He further explained that the measure is designed to protect consumers’ interests and ensure clarity in data and airtime usage.

Data depletion remains one of the most reported consumer complaints in Nigeria’s telecom sector. The NCC has taken steps to address these concerns, including:

  • Mandating operators to engage reputable audit firms to ensure accountability in data services.
  • Launching consumer awareness campaigns to educate users about factors influencing data consumption on different devices.

Maida emphasized:

“What consumers must know is that usage of data is not the same on every Android phone. As a consumer-centric regulator, the commission has embarked on public awareness to help consumers better understand their data usage.”

The NCC has intensified its advocacy efforts, using advertisements and public campaigns to inform consumers about their rights and the upcoming changes. The commission is optimistic that the simplified tariff plans will improve consumer experience and foster trust in the telecom sector.

Furthermore, with the new tariff plan set to launch, the NCC remains committed to creating a transparent, competitive, and consumer-friendly telecom environment in Nigeria.
