Embattled Kogi Central Senator, Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan, has expressed gratitude to several eminent Nigerians who stood by her during her six-month suspension from the Senate.
The lawmaker was suspended after she failed to substantiate her claim of sexual harassment against Senate President Godswill Akpabio. During the suspension, her office was sealed by the National Assembly’s Sergeant-at-Arms.
On Tuesday, Natasha’s office was unsealed, marking her official return to legislative duties.
Natasha appreciates supporters
Speaking to journalists in her office, Senator Natasha said she drew strength from the voices of support across political, civic, and professional circles.
She specifically mentioned:
- Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar
- Former Senate President Bukola Saraki
- Former Education Minister Oby Ezekwesili
- Aisha Yesufu, Mama Pee, Dr. Abiola, Peter Obi (“Peter the Rock”), Yemi Adamolekun of Enough is Enough, and human rights lawyer Femi Falana (SAN)
She also acknowledged the backing of political parties, including the Labour Party (LP), African Democratic Congress (ADC), her own party the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), as well as strong statements from the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) and the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC).
According to Natasha, the collective pressure from these individuals and institutions forced Senate President Akpabio to soften his stance.
Her words:
“I thank people like aunty Oby Ezekwesili, sister Aisha, Mama Pee, Dr Abiola, Peter d Rock, Yemi of Enough is Enough, Femi Falana, and many others that I can’t even call.
Atiku Abubakar, Saraki, many people who have learnt that voices and even political parties like the LP, ADC, my beloved PDP, Nigerian Bar Association, Nigerian Labour Congress… I think that was the pressure the Senate President realized he just can’t.”
Senator Natasha’s suspension, which many critics described as politically motivated, sparked widespread debate about women’s representation in politics and the treatment of opposition voices in the National Assembly.
Now back in the red chamber, Natasha’s return is expected to reignite discussions about legislative independence, gender equity, and the role of civic activism in holding leaders accountable.
As highlighted in this 9am News report, Natasha’s comeback could reshape debates within the Senate, especially with growing calls for inclusivity and protection of lawmakers’ rights.
