The Non-Academic Staff Union of Educational and Associated Institutions (NASU) and the Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities (SSANU) have jointly declared an indefinite nationwide strike across all Nigerian universities. The decision, which impacts non-academic staff, comes in response to the federal government’s failure to release four months of withheld salaries dating back to 2022.
The Joint Action Committee (JAC), representing both NASU and SSANU, announced in a Sunday statement that the indefinite strike will commence on Monday, October 28, 2024. The statement, signed by SSANU National President Mohammed Ibrahim and NASU General Secretary Peters Adeyemi, indicated that the unions had issued repeated ultimatums and held protests to push for the release of the withheld salaries, to no avail.
“We have exercised considerable and prolonged patience, allowing multiple deadlines to pass without receiving a satisfactory response to our demands by the Government,” the statement reads.
In the directive to members, JAC urged all non-academic staff at universities and inter-university centers nationwide to hold joint congresses on October 28 and prepare for an indefinite, comprehensive strike.
Furthermore, this development signals a disruption in Nigerian university operations, as non-academic staff play a crucial role in campus management and student services. Also, the unions remain firm in their stance, vowing to press on until the government meets their demands.
