MTN Honours Super Falcons with N150 Million Reward Over WAFCON Title

Super Falcons were honoured by MTN Nigeria with N150 million for winning their 10th WAFCON title. The event celebrated their resilience and inspired national pride.

Nigeria’s Senior Women’s National Football Team, the Super Falcons, have been honoured with a N150 million cash reward by MTN Nigeria following their historic 10th Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) title win in Morocco.

The emotional event, held in Lagos at Eko Hotels & Suites, was a celebration of excellence, resilience, and patriotism. The Justine Madugu-led team had staged a thrilling comeback from a 2–0 first-half deficit to beat the host nation 3–2 in the final at the Stade Olympique in Rabat.

Karl Toriola, CEO of MTN Nigeria, described the team as “national icons and role models.” He added,

“You are more than athletes. You are inspirations. You’ve shown that when Nigerian women rise, the world takes notice.”

The breakfast reception drew top dignitaries, including NFF President Ibrahim Musa Gusau, Secretary-General Dr. Mohammed Sanusi, senior MTN executives, and an excited crowd of fans.

“We feel honoured and valued” – Ajibade

Team captain Rasheedat Ajibade, who spoke on behalf of her teammates, expressed heartfelt appreciation to MTN, fans, and government officials.

“Thank you so much for coming out to celebrate with us. This gesture makes us feel valued and honoured. It motivates us to do more and continue inspiring the next generation,” she said.

Ajibade also thanked President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and the First Lady for their national support and personal gifts, calling the experience “life-changing.”

Despite celebrating the 10th WAFCON crown, Ajibade emphasized that the Super Falcons have their sights set on global dominance:

“We want to be global contenders. We understand the responsibility on our shoulders and hope the government and private sector will keep investing in us.”

Board member Ifueko M. Omoigui Okauru, a non-executive director at MTN Nigeria, delivered a moving message of hope to Nigerians facing hardship.

“These girls have shown us what perseverance looks like. Let their victory remind every Nigerian to never give up, no matter the challenges.”

She called on the nation to draw strength from the Falcons’ journey and to believe in the possibility of rising again.

The Super Falcons’ triumph at WAFCON 2024 is more than a football story it’s a national moment of inspiration. The recognition by MTN and the outpouring of national support underscore the team’s place in Nigeria’s sporting history and its growing influence on global women’s football.
