Mojisola Meranda Becomes First Female Speaker of Lagos State House of Assembly

Mojisola Meranda makes history as the first female Speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly following Mudashiru Obasa's impeachment.
Lagos First Female Speaker

In a groundbreaking development, Mojisola Lasbat Meranda has been elected the Speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly, becoming the first female to hold this position in the state’s history. Meranda, representing Apapa Constituency I, assumed the role on Monday after the impeachment of Mudashiru Obasa, who served as Speaker for nearly a decade.

Meranda’s election comes amid significant changes in the Lagos State Assembly. Her predecessor, Obasa, who represented Agege Constituency I, was impeached following allegations of misconduct and other offenses. The decision to remove him was supported by more than two-thirds of the Assembly’s 40 members, marking the end of his tenure that began in June 2015.

Obasa’s former deputy, Meranda, was immediately elected Speaker in a unanimous vote, reflecting a collective desire for change within the Assembly.

Speaking on the impeachment, Abiodun Tobun, a member representing Epe Constituency I, emphasized the need to uphold the sanctity and integrity of the House.

He stated, “The Constitution makes it clear that the House has the powers to regulate its proceedings. Today, we have unanimously agreed that Rt Hon Mojisola Meranda Lasbat becomes the new Speaker of the House.”

Tobun added that the move was necessary to restore public trust and ensure the Assembly remains accountable to its constituents.

On Tuesday, a day after her election, Meranda visited members of the Governor’s Advisory Council (GAC), the highest decision-making body of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Lagos. She briefed the council on the Assembly’s developments and sought their blessings, which she received. The visit underscores her commitment to collaborative governance and respect for established political structures.

Also, Meranda’s election signals a new chapter for the Lagos State House of Assembly, with a focus on integrity and accountability. As the first female Speaker, her leadership is expected to inspire more inclusivity and set a precedent for women in governance.

Her tenure promises to prioritize legislative reforms that align with the needs of Lagos State’s diverse population while maintaining the integrity of the legislative body.

This historic transition in leadership reflects the dynamic nature of Lagos politics and the Assembly’s commitment to progress.
