The Nigerian military high command has expressed its intention to harness the skills of law-abiding citizens in the local production of firearms and military-grade equipment. This move is aimed at addressing the circulation of illegal arms in the country and strengthening the nation’s security infrastructure.

During an operational visit to frontline troops of Operation Safe Haven in Plateau State, the Chief of Defence Staff (CDS), General Christopher Musa, made this announcement. The CDS was responding to the seizure of a cache of locally-made arms and ammunition within operational areas.

General Musa emphasized the military’s commitment to ending the production and circulation of illegal arms, stating that the focus will be on engaging local manufacturers within the Defence Industries Corporation of Nigeria (DICON).

Operational Visit and Inspection

The CDS began his operational visit at the 3 Division headquarters of the Nigerian Army at Maxwell Khobe Cantonment in Jos, Plateau State. There, he was received by the General Officer Commanding and inspected the quarter guard at the cantonment.

Subsequent visits included Sector 8 of Operation Safe Haven in Mangu, where the CDS inspected military hardware and operational equipment at the forward operation base. The aim was to evaluate and improve the operational capabilities of troops through additional resources, including advanced weaponry, vehicles, and welfare improvements.

Gen. Musa urged the troops to intensify their efforts in combating criminal hideouts and insurgency, calling for renewed and greater vigor in the fight against insecurity in the new year.

The CDS acknowledged the professionalism, discipline, and respect for human rights displayed by the troops during their operations. He commended them for maintaining peace and security despite numerous challenges.

Also, This move towards local production of military equipment is seen as a strategic initiative to bolster national security, ensure the professionalism of the Nigerian Armed Forces, and promote sustainable solutions to arms proliferation.
