A devastating fire broke out late Friday night, engulfing several buildings used for the sale of car spare parts at Idumota, under the bridge, Ebute-Ero area of Lagos Island. The inferno, which started around 11 p.m., caused massive destruction, with properties worth hundreds of millions of naira reduced to ashes.
Fortunately, no casualties or injuries were reported as rescue operations swiftly contained the blaze before it could spread to nearby structures.
Teams from the Federal and Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service, Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA), and the Nigeria Police collaborated to manage the situation. According to Margaret Adeseye, Permanent Secretary of LASEMA and Director of the Lagos State Fire Service:
“The rescue team worked together to curtail the fire, preventing it from escalating to adjoining buildings.”
Dr. Femi Oke-Osanyintolu, LASEMA’s Permanent Secretary, provided additional updates:
“Properties and goods worth hundreds of millions of naira were destroyed, but no injuries or casualties were recorded at the scene.”
As of this morning, the cause of the fire remains unknown, and investigations are underway. A dampening-down exercise is ongoing to ensure that all remaining hotspots are fully extinguished.
Also Law enforcement agencies implemented crowd management strategies at the scene to ensure safety and support rescue efforts.
The incident underscores the need for stricter fire safety measures, especially in high-risk commercial areas. Local authorities are expected to conduct an in-depth investigation to determine the cause and prevent future occurrences.
