Manchester United looked set to secure the Community Shield when substitute Alejandro Garnacho fired a fantastic shot into the net with just eight minutes remaining in regular time. However, Manchester City’s substitute Bernardo Silva had other plans. Entering the game just eight minutes earlier, Silva headed home a crucial equalizer from Oscar Bobb’s cross in the 89th minute, pushing the match into a penalty shootout.
The shootout, the fourth in six seasons for the Community Shield, saw tension reach its peak. Jonny Evans of Manchester United missed his penalty, giving Manuel Akanji the chance to seal the victory for Manchester City. Akanji converted his penalty, securing a 7-6 win and handing Pep Guardiola’s side their first trophy of the 2024/25 season.
