Breaking news from 9am news Nigeria: The Super Eagles of Nigeria began their Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON 2025) qualifying campaign with a commanding 3-0 victory over Benin Republic. This triumph serves as a redemption after their disappointing 2-1 loss in the 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifier against the same opponent. Under the temporary leadership of Augustine Eguavoen, the Super Eagles broke their three-game losing streak and scored three goals in a competitive match for the first time since September 2023.

Ogasabi reports that Ademola Lookman, a strong contender for the Ballon d’Or, was the standout performer on Saturday night, contributing significantly to two of Nigeria’s goals. Galatasaray’s Victor Osimhen also added to his impressive tally, scoring his 22nd goal for Nigeria, surpassing Yakubu Ayegbeni to become the third-highest goal scorer in Super Eagles history.

With this victory, Nigeria now sits atop the Group D table with three points. Libya and Rwanda follow, having drawn 1-1 earlier in the week, while Benin occupies the bottom spot. The Super Eagles will continue their campaign on Tuesday, September 10, when they travel to Kigali to face Rwanda in their second group match.

Stay tuned to 9am news Nigeria for more breaking news and updates on the Super Eagles’ AFCON 2025 journey. Ogasabi will keep you informed with the latest developments as Nigeria aims for continental glory.
