Liverpool have reached a historic agreement to sign Alexander Isak from Newcastle United in a record-breaking deal worth £125 million, setting a new benchmark for Premier League transfers.

The 25-year-old Sweden international will officially join the reigning champions on a six-year contract after completing his medical in Merseyside on Monday.

According to reports from The Athletic and Telegraph Sport, negotiations accelerated over the weekend, with Newcastle’s majority stakeholders, Saudi Arabia’s Public Investment Fund (PIF), giving the green light to the sale once Liverpool met their valuation.

The £125m package for Isak surpasses Chelsea’s £106m acquisition of Enzo Fernandez from Benfica in January 2023, making the striker the most expensive player in Premier League history.

Liverpool had already spent heavily this summer with the signing of German sensation Florian Wirtz from Bayer Leverkusen in a deal worth £116m. Adding Isak now makes it one of the most expensive transfer windows in the club’s history.

Liverpool’s initial £110m bid for Isak was rejected, with Newcastle holding out for £120m. The final agreement of £125m, which includes solidarity payments, ensures Newcastle receive £130m in total.

For Newcastle United, losing Isak is a huge blow, as the Swedish forward was central to their attack since his arrival from Real Sociedad. However, the staggering fee gives the club flexibility in the market as they urgently search for a replacement striker before the transfer deadline.

Sources confirm that Newcastle have reopened talks with Chelsea over Nicolas Jackson, though he is not their only option. Potential moves for Yoane Wissa of Brentford and Jorgen Strand Larsen of Wolves have been deemed unlikely, pushing the Magpies to explore alternative strikers.

The club recently broke their transfer record by signing German striker Nick Woltemade for £69m, but Eddie Howe’s side remains keen to add another proven centre-forward to their squad.

For Liverpool, the signing of Isak strengthens their attack as they prepare to defend their Premier League crown. Manager Jürgen Klopp will now have one of the league’s most clinical finishers alongside Wirtz, Mohamed Salah, and Darwin Núñez.

With Isak’s pace, aerial ability, and finishing prowess, the Reds have added a marquee signing who could shape their title defense and Champions League campaign.

The transfer is being described as the “saga of the summer”, with Liverpool finally securing their target after weeks of negotiations.
