More than six million registered voters across Lagos State are expected to head to the polls this Saturday to elect 57 council chairmen and 376 councillors in the Lagos local government election 2025.
The Lagos State Independent Electoral Commission (LASIEC) Chairperson, Justice Bola Okikiolu-Ighile (Rtd), disclosed this during a press briefing in Lagos while giving updates on the commission’s readiness for the election.
Justice Okikiolu-Ighile clarified that the election will be conducted in all 20 Local Government Areas (LGAs) and 37 Local Council Development Areas (LCDAs) across the state, covering all the 13,325 Polling Units.
She revealed that out of the 7,060,195 registered voters, 6,214,970 have collected their Permanent Voter’s Cards (PVCs), while 845,225 PVCs remain uncollected.
9am News report gathered that 15 out of the 19 registered political parties will participate in the polls.
Speaking on the commission’s preparedness, the LASIEC Chair assured that the commission is fully ready to conduct a peaceful, fair and credible election that would be free from intimidation or electoral malpractice.
“The commission is leaving no stone unturned to ensure a successful, free, fair and credible election that is devoid of violence, intimidation, or harassment,” she said. “My appeal to all the contestants is to uphold democratic values and conduct themselves with decorum, maturity, and respect for the rule of law.”
She added that LASIEC will remain non-partisan and would not tolerate any form of electoral malpractice or violence during the election.
On accreditation, Justice Okikiolu-Ighile confirmed that LASIEC will not deploy the Bimodal Voter Accreditation System (BVAS) but has instead developed an alternative electronic device that performs the same function.
“We have worked with a device using telephone to get voters accredited for the election. It works anywhere and does the same work as the BVAS,” she said.
She disclosed that the distribution of sensitive election materials will be carried out on the eve of the election in the presence of security agencies and political party agents to guarantee security and transparency. Non-sensitive materials, she said, have already been deployed to the relevant local councils.
She further explained that councillorship election results will be collated at ward collation centres, while chairmanship results will be collated at the respective local government collation centres.
As Lagosians get set to decide who leads at the grassroots level, LASIEC called on the media to provide balanced reportage, and on voters to come out peacefully to exercise their civic rights.
