The Lagos State Government has shut down DONALD Restaurant, a popular nightlife venue on Road 14, Lekki Phase 1, following its alleged involvement in illegal waste disposal activities along Durosimi-Etti Street.
According to Tokunbo Wahab, Commissioner for Environment and Water Resources, the action came after security personnel from the Lekki Estate Residents Association (LERA) caught a group of individuals dumping waste indiscriminately in the estate.
Investigations quickly led authorities to trace a white Ford van with Abuja registration GWA 136E—used in the illegal activity—back to DONALD Restaurant, prompting swift enforcement.
Wahab noted, “The suspects were apprehended on the scene by LERA’s Chief Security Officer and taken into custody at the LERA Secretariat. An attempt to bribe the security team with N100,000 was firmly rejected.”
The 9am News report confirmed that the Lagos Waste Management Authority (LAWMA) immediately dispatched its Monitoring and Compliance team to the location. Following their assessment, the restaurant was sealed for gross environmental violations, particularly breaches of the Lagos State Environmental Management and Protection Law, 2017.
Officials suspect that the case may be part of a larger issue of non-compliance among some commercial establishments in Lekki Phase 1, who allegedly bypass established waste disposal frameworks. Despite active collaboration between LAWMA and 428 accredited Private Sector Participation (PSP) operators across more than 40 service routes, violations remain persistent.
Mr. Muyiwa Gbadegesin, LAWMA’s Managing Director, reaffirmed the agency’s commitment to environmental protection, emphasizing that such violations will not go unpunished.
In a related development, the state government also sealed Viva Bella Court II, a residential property in Lekki Peninsula, for environmental breaches. The property was found to be discharging untreated wastewater into public drainage channels and allowing overfilled septic tanks to overflow, posing serious health risks.
Authorities have urged both commercial and residential property owners in Lagos to comply strictly with environmental regulations or face severe penalties.
