The Lagos State Safety Commission has sealed a construction site operated by Monterosa Construction Company in the Lekki area following the tragic death of a crane operator, Rotimi Adesina.
According to a 9am News report, the fatal incident occurred at about 7:30 a.m. on Wednesday. Adesina, believed to be the crane operator on duty, sustained critical injuries while operating the equipment and was rushed to Evercare Hospital in Lekki Phase 1, where he was pronounced dead shortly after arrival.
In an official statement obtained by 9am News, the Director General of the Lagos State Safety Commission, Lanre Mojola, confirmed that the construction site has been sealed to prevent any further incidents while a full investigation is underway.
“The Lagos State Safety Commission has sealed the Monterosa Construction Company site following a serious crane incident,” the statement read in part. “Preliminary investigation from officials who promptly arrived at the site revealed that the crane operator, Mr. Rotimi Adesina, sustained fatal injuries during the incident.”
It was also confirmed that the company’s Health, Safety, and Environment Officer was initially unavailable for questioning as he was attending to Adesina at the hospital. The Project Manager, Hein Coerzer, and the Company Secretary, Ndidi Uchechukwu, have since been engaged by the Commission and directed to submit all relevant documents related to the crane and site operations for review.
Emphasising the Commission’s commitment to workplace safety, Mojola stated, “Safety of lives is key, and on no account should safety precautionary measures be compromised.” He extended condolences to Adesina’s family and vowed that the state would continue to enforce strict safety regulations to prevent further workplace tragedies.
Adesina’s death adds to a worrying list of fatal workplace incidents in Lagos State. In October 2024, Olalekan Oloruntoba, another crane operator, was crushed to death at a Julius Berger construction yard in Ijora. That incident prompted an investigation that led to sanctions and stricter compliance measures for the company.
In a similar case last August, a contract worker died after jumping into an iron melting pot at his workplace an incident that was later ruled a suicide, although the Safety Commission’s investigation uncovered gaps in protective equipment standards.
As Lagos pushes to maintain safer work environments, the Commission has urged construction firms and industrial operators to adhere strictly to all safety standards to avoid preventable loss of life.
