Nollywood icons, budding filmmakers, and top government officials gathered in Lagos as the Golden Movies Ambassadors of Nigeria (TGMAAN) launched its maiden Lagos Film Festival.
The event, which took place on 29 August at the KICC Dome in Maryland, blended red-carpet elegance with thought-provoking industry discussions and recognition of outstanding achievements. Sponsored by LAPO Microfinance Bank, the festival was designed to strengthen Lagos’ image as a hub for African cinema and storytelling.
Panels focused on Nollywood’s growth and the future of African film. Key voices included Abuja Film Festival founder Fidelis Duker, Anita Edward of Tribe Nation Film Distribution, and Omotayo Queen Inakoju of EbonyLife, all of whom offered perspectives on distribution, creativity, and sustainability in the fast-growing industry.

The evening’s highlight was the awards segment. Funke Akindele’s production won Best Box Office Movie, Femi Adebayo clinched the Outstanding Movie Prize, while Tunde Olaoye was honoured with Best Co-Director. Tributes also took centre stage, with Fidelis Duker and Ade Ajiboye ‘Big Abass’ receiving Trailblazer Awards, Charles Novia named as Veteran honoree, and Pa Kola Olaiya recognised as the Oldest Active Actor. Nike Wellington was celebrated as the Most Consistent contributor.
The festival also drew high-profile attendees, including Dr. Shaibu Husseini, Director General of the National Film and Video Censors Board (NFVCB), Hon. Solomon Bonu, Hon. Otunba Babatola Faseru, and Hon. Laide Bakare, who represented the Governor of Osun State. Their presence underlined the government’s growing interest in Nollywood’s role as both a cultural and economic driver.
