The Lagos State Government has declared 176 estates as illegal. These estates are located in fast-developing areas like Ibeju-Lekki, Ajah, Epe, Eti-Osa, and Ikorodu. The estates were marked illegal because they lack proper layout approvals and are not registered with the Lagos State Real Estate Regulatory Authority (LASRERA).
This means many property buyers and residents may face issues if action is not taken quickly.
Why These Estates Were Marked Illegal
The Ministry of Physical Planning and Urban Development said the estates did not follow state building laws. The government wants developers to submit their plans and get official approval before selling or developing any land.
The illegal estates in Lagos also failed to register with LASRERA, which monitors real estate activities in the state. The government says this is part of its plan to improve city planning and protect buyers.
What Buyers Should Do
If you have bought land or property in any of the 176 illegal estates in Lagos:
- Contact the estate developer immediately
- Ask for planning approval documents
- Confirm the estate is registered with LASRERA
- Seek legal advice to protect your rights
The government has given developers 21 days to fix their documents. If they do not, the estates may be sealed.
