In a significant political shake-up, the Lagos State House of Assembly on Monday impeached its Speaker, Mudashiru Obasa, citing numerous statutory and financial infractions. His removal comes amid allegations of mismanagement and corruption that have dogged his tenure for years.
Following the impeachment, Deputy Speaker Lasbat Meranda was appointed as the new Speaker of the House. Representing Apapa Constituency 1, Mrs. Meranda, a former chief whip, brings a wealth of legislative experience to her new role.
Mr. Obasa’s impeachment occurred while he was reportedly in Atlanta, United States.
The decision to remove Mr. Obasa follows mounting accusations of financial mismanagement. Recently, reports surfaced about the Speaker’s involvement in the withdrawal of ₦43.5 billion for backup vehicles for lawmakers, alongside other controversial expenditures.
This is not the first time Mr. Obasa’s actions have come under scrutiny.
- In 2020, investigative reports by The Gazette and Sahara Reporters detailed how Mr. Obasa allegedly diverted public funds to personal accounts and private firms.
- The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) invited him for questioning following widespread media coverage of his activities. However, despite the allegations, no charges were filed.
Mudashiru Obasa, 52, began his term as Speaker on June 8, 2015, under the administration of former Lagos State Governor Akinwunmi Ambode. His tenure, however, was marked by repeated allegations of fraud and political thuggery.
The recent exposé on financial irregularities appears to have been the tipping point, leading to his ousting by members of the Assembly.
The appointment of Mrs. Meranda signals a new chapter for the Lagos State House of Assembly. Her leadership is expected to focus on restoring public trust and ensuring transparency in the House’s activities.
As for Mr. Obasa, it remains to be seen whether further legal or investigative actions will be taken following his impeachment.
This development underscores the importance of accountability and the growing demand for ethical governance in Nigerian politics.
