Labour Party Sacks National Chairman Julius Abure

Nenadi Usman leads a 29-member caretaker committee for the Labour Party, replacing Julius Abure as national chairperson

Breaking news from 9am news Nigeria: Nenadi Usman has been appointed as the new leader of a 29-member caretaker committee for the Labour Party, replacing Julius Abure as national chairperson. The party’s National Executive Committee (NEC), led by Comrade Julius Abure, has been dissolved, with Usman, a former finance minister, stepping in alongside secretary Hon. Darlington Nwokocha to fill the leadership gap.

This decision was made during a meeting convened by Abia State Governor Alex Otti, the party’s sole governor, alongside key stakeholders and the “duly constituted” NEC. The meeting, led by Peter Obi, the Labour Party’s presidential candidate in the 2023 general election, was attended by numerous prominent party members, including all LP state and federal MPs. Notably, Abure and his allies were absent.

Julius Term As National chairman

The stakeholders argued that Julius Abure term as labour party national chairman ended in June, disqualifying him from continuing in the role. The newly established caretaker committee includes members representing the party’s “various interests and tendencies,” such as the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), Trade Union Congress (TUC), Senate, House of Representatives, Houses of Assembly, and LP governorship candidates from 2023.

The committee has been tasked with overseeing the party’s affairs for the next three months, during which time new leaders will be elected at all levels. The stakeholders urged all party members to support the caretaker committee in fulfilling its mandate.

Furthermore, Peter Obi praised Governor Otti for his efforts in organizing the meeting, emphasizing the importance of due process and inclusivity in the party’s future actions. Usman acknowledged the significant responsibility placed on the caretaker committee and assured stakeholders that efforts would be made to restore the Labour Party to its rightful place. She noted that the party’s internal issues had discouraged potential members, but the committee is committed to resolving these problems.
