Labour Party Launches Online Membership Registration, Sets 20 Million Membership Target Before 2027

The Labour Party has unveiled an online membership registration and revalidation application as part of its ambitious plan to expand its membership base to 20 million before the 2027 general election.

This was announced following the National Executive Council (NEC) meeting held virtually on Saturday. The NEC also released timelines for congresses at ward, local government, and state levels, alongside restructuring efforts to enhance the party’s operations.

Membership Registration Details

According to Labour Party National Publicity Secretary Obiora Ifoh, all existing members are required to revalidate their membership, while new members can register online through the platform here.

  • Registration Timeline: Immediate effect until January 31, 2025.
  • Objective: Update the ward register ahead of upcoming congresses.

Congress Timeline

The NEC outlined the following schedule for the congresses:

  1. Ward Congresses: February–March 2025
    • 17 positions to be contested, including Chairman, Vice Chairpersons (male and female), and other key roles.
  2. Local Government Congresses: April–May 2025
    • 21 positions, such as Chairman, Vice Chairpersons, Secretary, and Youth Leader, will be contested.
  3. State Congresses: June–July 2025
    • 29 positions to be contested, including Chairman, Deputy Chairpersons, and other executive roles.

States ready for congresses must notify INEC as mandated.

Organizational Restructuring

The NEC approved significant structural changes:

  • Directorate of Mobilisation and Integration: Applauded for its success and urged to intensify its efforts under Dr. Mercel Ngogbehei and Sheikh Rufai Al-Sadique.
  • Directorate of International and Diaspora Affairs: Newly created to manage the party’s diasporan membership, headed by Prof. Eddie Oparaoji with Ms. Aju Elumelu as Secretary.

The directorates will ensure inclusivity and strategic expansion of the Labour Party’s reach domestically and internationally.

Also The Labour Party’s NEC reiterated its commitment to growth, inclusivity, and readiness for the 2027 elections. Aspiring members and party officials are encouraged to prepare for the congresses as the party sets its sights on achieving transformative milestones.
