Ogasabi on 9am news brings you the latest Breaking news on upcoming local government elections in Kwara and Anambra states. The independent electoral commissions in these states have scheduled the elections for September 21 and September 28, 2024, respectively, marking significant steps toward reinstating democratic governance at the local level.

Kwara LG Elections

In Kwara State, the Independent Electoral Commission has confirmed that all necessary arrangements are in place for the local government elections, which will see democratically elected chairmen taking charge of the 16 LG councils in the North Central state. The ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) has declared its readiness for the elections, while the opposition Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has raised concerns about the planned exercise. For nearly five years, these local government areas have been under the management of sole administrators, but with the election now scheduled, Kwara is set to witness a return to democratic leadership at the local level.

Anambra Elections

9am news Nigeria also reports that the Anambra State Independent Electoral Commission has announced local government elections across all 21 LG councils in the South-East state, set for Saturday, September 28, 2024. The electoral commission has informed all registered political parties and the general public about the upcoming elections and has made election timetables and other details available at its headquarters in Awka, starting Wednesday, August 14, 2024.

This wave of local government elections follows the recent landmark ruling by the Supreme Court, which granted financial autonomy to the third tier of government, directing the Federal Government to pay the 20.60% monthly allocation of the 774 LGs directly to their accounts, bypassing governors. This ruling also prohibits governors from dissolving democratically elected local government councils, ensuring greater stability and autonomy at the local government level.

9am news will continue to provide updates on these elections, including the latest developments from the electoral commissions, political parties, and other stakeholders. Stay tuned for more from Ogasabi on 9am news as these crucial elections approach.
