Abdulazeez Adediran, popularly known as Jandor, has officially declared his ambition to contest the Lagos State governorship seat in 2027.
Speaking on Politics Today, a Channels Television programme on Thursday, Jandor who was the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) governorship candidate in the 2023 elections—confirmed that he will run again, this time under the All Progressives Congress (APC).
In March, Jandor resigned from the PDP, citing indiscipline and anti-party activities within the opposition, before defecting to the ruling APC. He finished third in the 2023 polls with 62,449 votes, behind Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu of the APC (762,134 votes) and Gbadebo Rhodes-Vivour of the Labour Party (312,329 votes).
“I Am Contesting in 2027” – Jandor
Jandor explained that while he would support any candidate chosen by the APC, including Seyi Tinubu, son of President Bola Tinubu, he remains determined to test his strength in the primaries.
“Okay, all the names you mentioned Seyi, former Governor Akinwunmi Ambode, and Tokunbo Abiru are qualified to contest for Lagos governor, and this includes Seyi himself,” he said.
“However, aside from Ambode, none of the others mentioned have contested a governorship election like I have. I come with that experience, having gone through the entire process alone without backing, and learnt the complexities involved in campaigning and winning in Lagos.”
He stressed that he would fall in line with the APC’s decision if another candidate emerged but maintained:
“I am running for Lagos governor in 2027 and have officially declared.”
On Seyi Tinubu’s Rumoured Ambition
There have been speculations about Seyi Tinubu’s interest in contesting the Lagos governorship, though the president’s son has not made any formal announcement. Jandor noted that while Seyi is qualified, he is “less experienced” since he has never appeared on the ballot before.
Jandor also spoke about the 2027 presidential race, expressing confidence that President Bola Tinubu will win decisively.
“2027, not only in Lagos but across the country, is going to be a walkover for the man whose courage and leadership have contributed so much to Nigeria today,” he said.
He added that Tinubu’s political structure has expanded nationwide since 2023, making another upset unlikely.
“Remember, in 2023, Jandor and his Lagos for Lagos movement were outside the system. This time, we are back inside, so the outcome will be entirely different,” he said.
The 9am News report confirms that Jandor has begun mobilising support for the APC ahead of the 2027 Lagos governorship election, insisting that there is “no vacancy at Aso Rock until 2031” and that his focus remains on Lagos.
