The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has announced that candidates in the upcoming Ondo State governorship election will sign a peace accord on November 8, 2024, aimed at ensuring a violence-free election. INEC Chairman Prof Mahmood Yakubu disclosed this during a consultative meeting with Civil Society Organizations (CSOs) in Abuja. The peace accord, facilitated by the National Peace Committee under former Head of State Gen Abdulsalami Abubakar, aims to secure a pledge from all candidates for a peaceful election ahead of the November 16 polls.
Yakubu also highlighted INEC’s proactive measures to enhance the election’s integrity, including a mock accreditation exercise on November 6, which will test result uploads via the commission’s result viewing portal. Nearly 72% of registered voters in Ondo State have already collected their Permanent Voter Cards (PVCs), showing strong civic engagement.
INEC is coordinating with security agencies to address flashpoints identified in certain local government areas, aiming to prevent election-related violence. Prof Yakubu also urged CSOs to submit reports from their observation of the recent Edo State election, emphasizing their continued role in fostering transparency and peaceful conduct.
As INEC finalizes preparations, the peace accord signing marks a critical step toward promoting unity and ensuring a credible, violence-free election in Ondo State.
