INEC Requests Additional Funding Ahead of 2027 General Elections

INEC Chairman Mahmood Yakubu appeals for additional funding to support preparations for Nigeria's 2027 elections
INEC 2027 elections funding

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has called for additional funding from the Federal Government to bolster preparations for the 2027 general elections. INEC Chairman, Professor Mahmood Yakubu, made this appeal on Friday while defending the commission’s 2025 budget proposal before the Joint Committee on Electoral Matters at the National Assembly Complex in Abuja.

Highlighting the commission’s priorities, Professor Yakubu identified several areas requiring financial support:

  • Continuous Voter Registration (CVR) exercises.
  • Logistics for off-cycle elections.
  • Replacement of damaged election materials, including the Bimodal Voter Accreditation Systems (BVAS), ballot boxes, and voting cubicles.
  • Repairs to INEC offices in Local Government Areas affected by damage.

Professor Yakubu emphasized that 2025 is a pivotal year for laying the groundwork for the 2027 elections. He underscored the importance of timely funding to ensure smooth operations and effective preparation.

INEC reiterated its commitment to strengthening Nigeria’s electoral process and fostering democracy. Meanwhile, the commission addressed recent reports claiming it intended to destroy over six million uncollected Permanent Voters’ Cards (PVCs) from the 2015 voter registration. INEC categorically refuted the allegations, stating, “The report is incorrect. At no time did INEC contemplate the destruction of uncollected PVCs.”

This proactive approach by INEC underscores its dedication to transparent and credible elections while ensuring that infrastructure and voter registration systems are well-prepared ahead of the 2027 polls.
