According to Ogasabi on 9am news, the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has registered 177,914 new voters ahead of the 2019 governorship elections in Edo and Ondo states. Edo State has gained 119,206 new voters, while Ondo State has 58,708 new voters.
In a statement issued on Monday, Sam Olumekun, the National Commissioner and Chairman of the Information and Voter Education Committee, highlighted these figures. “Nigerians may recall that in our Press Statement on Tuesday, June 11, 2024, we released preliminary figures of newly registered voters for the upcoming Edo and Ondo State Governorship elections prior to the period for claims and objections, followed by data cleaning up using the Automated Biometric Identification System.” These processes are now been completed. “There are 119,206 new voters in Edo State and 58,708 in Ondo State,” stated Olumekun.
Breaking news from 9am news Nigeria clarifies that these numbers do not include the 8,847 voter transfer petitions from outside of Edo State and the 3,132 applications from outside of Ondo State. They have already incorporated state transfers into the voter register.
The announcement states, “The figures of the new voters and inter-state transfers are being integrated into the existing register.” In the upcoming days, INEC will make available the complete and official voter registration for both states.
“The comprehensive and final voter registration to be used for the 2024 Governorship elections for each of the two States will be released by the Commission in the coming days,” Olumekun added.
