The Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Prof. Mahmood Yakubu, on Tuesday, officially stepped down from his position as his second and final five-year tenure draws to a close ahead of its expiration in November 2025.
Following his exit, May Agbamuche-Mbu, INEC’s National Commissioner and Chairperson of the Legal Services, Clearance and Complaints Committee, has assumed office as Acting Chairman of the Commission.
Yakubu made the announcement during a meeting with Resident Electoral Commissioners (RECs) held at INEC headquarters in Abuja.
According to a reliable source within the Commission, Yakubu’s exit is in line with the constitutional term limit. He had previously vacated office in November 2020 after his first tenure ended, before being renominated by the President and confirmed by the Senate for a second term.
In an emotionally charged farewell speech, Yakubu expressed gratitude to INEC staff and RECs nationwide for their unwavering commitment, professionalism, and resilience during his time at the helm.
He said his tenure had been marked by challenges and milestones, emphasizing the collective effort that helped to strengthen Nigeria’s democratic process through credible elections and continuous reforms.

May Agbamuche-Mbu Takes the Helm
May Agbamuche-Mbu, a seasoned lawyer and one of the longest-serving National Commissioners in INEC, now oversees the affairs of the electoral body in an acting capacity pending further administrative decisions.
Her assumption comes at a crucial period as INEC prepares for multiple off-cycle governorship elections and the early planning stages for the 2027 general elections.
A 9am News report indicates that Agbamuche-Mbu’s leadership will focus on maintaining institutional stability and ensuring seamless transition while upholding the Commission’s integrity and transparency.
