IGP Prohibits Amotekun, Vigilante Corps From Participating in Ondo Governorship Election

The Inspector-General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, has issued a ban on the Western Nigeria Security Network, popularly known as Amotekun, and the Vigilante Corps from participating in the upcoming Ondo State governorship election on November 16, 2024. This directive, aimed at ensuring a smooth and secure electoral process, announced in a statement by Force Public Relations Officer Muyiwa Adejobi on Sunday.

Enhanced Security Measures

The police deployment will also include aerial and waterway patrols. Police helicopters will conduct aerial surveillance, while gunboats will secure the waterways and riverine areas, ensuring robust security across all terrains.

The IGP emphasized that all security operations will adhere to the Electoral Act, 2022, guaranteeing fairness, transparency, and order throughout the election process. He further assured the public of the Nigeria Police Force’s commitment to safeguarding Ondo’s electoral integrity.

Warning Against Electoral Disruption

IGP Egbetokun issued a strong warning to any political thugs or individuals planning to disrupt the election, stating that violators will face legal consequences. “Those who attempt to jeopardize the peace and security of the state will not go unpunished,” emphasized Adejobi.

Election Participation

The Ondo State governorship election will see no fewer than 17 political parties vying for office. Furthermore, Only federal security agencies and members of the Inter-Agency Consultative Committee on Election Security are authorized to provide security on election day, in line with national regulations.

Also, Through these comprehensive measures, the Nigeria Police Force aims to maintain stability, deter violence, and facilitate a peaceful election in Ondo State.
