Ibadan, the Oyo State capital, is in full celebration mode as preparations reach their peak for the coronation of former governor, Senator Rashidi Ladoja, as the 44th Olubadan of Ibadanland. The event, set to take place today at the historic Mapo Hall, has drawn attention nationwide, with President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and other top dignitaries expected in attendance.
As part of the buildup, religious leaders, politicians, and indigenes gathered yesterday at Ibadan House, Oke Aremo, to offer prayers for the 81-year-old monarch. The event was attended by the President General of the Central Council of Ibadan Indigenes (CCII), Ajeniyi Ajewole, President of Ibadan Mogajis, Mogaji Asimiyu Ariori, Senators Sharafadeen Ali and Teslim Folarin, as well as clerics including the Chief Imam of Ibadanland, Sheikh Abubakar Agbotomokekere, and the Chief Imam of Ogbomoso, Imam Taliat Ayilara.
Prayers were offered for long life, peace, and development under Ladoja’s reign. Although the celebrant was absent, one of his children presented a brief biography highlighting his achievements as a businessman, senator, governor, and elder statesman.
The Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN), Oyo State chapter, also congratulated Ladoja. Chairman Apostle Joshua Akinyemiju described him as an intelligent and principled leader, expressing confidence that his reign would bring “greater development, peace, and prosperity” to Ibadanland.
Across the ancient city, anticipation is at its peak. From major markets to neighborhoods, residents have described the coronation as a historic cultural moment. Colourful banners, billboards, and decorations adorn strategic locations, while traditional drummers and cultural troupes prepare to entertain.
Traffic has been heavy on major roads leading to Mapo Hall, with diversions and security checkpoints in place. Officers of the Nigerian Army, DSS, NSCDC, Nigeria Police, FRSC, OYRTMA, and Amotekun Corps have been deployed to ensure safety and orderliness.
Media houses, including Channels TV, Arise, TVC, BCOS, and several radio stations, have set up outside broadcasting units to provide live coverage.
Governor Makinde cuts short leave
Oyo State Governor, Seyi Makinde, has cut short his annual vacation to oversee and participate in the coronation. In a letter read at the state assembly plenary, Makinde explained that the historic and culturally significant nature of the event required his presence. He formally resumed duties yesterday, thanking Deputy Governor Bayo Lawal for holding forth in his absence.
The House of Assembly commended the governor’s decision, describing it as a demonstration of leadership and respect for Ibadan’s cultural heritage.
Indigenes at home and abroad hailed Oba Ladoja as a leader with a track record of fairness, justice, and resilience. Many expressed optimism that his reign as Olubadan will usher in unprecedented development and unity in Ibadanland.
Traditional music, dance, and prayers by well-wishers crowned yesterday’s activities, setting the tone for today’s grand coronation at Mapo Hall.
