The Nigerian House of Representatives has announced plans to present ₦704.91 million to President Bola Tinubu on December 31, 2024. The funds are earmarked to support vulnerable Nigerians grappling with economic challenges stemming from the removal of the petrol subsidy.
This gesture follows a resolution by the House in July to donate 50% of their salaries for six months to alleviate the hardships faced by ordinary Nigerians.
During the plenary session in July, Deputy Speaker Benjamin Kalu proposed the motion, highlighting the need for lawmakers to make personal sacrifices.
“Our salary is ₦600,000 a month. I want to plead that we let go of 50 per cent of our salary for six months,” Kalu stated.
The Speaker of the House, Tajudeen Abba, expressed gratitude for the collective effort during a plenary session, saying:
“If you recall, about five months ago, we decided to contribute half of our salaries to address the critical needs of the Nigerian people. I am happy to inform you that so far, we have contributed ₦704,907,578.82.”
Presentation to the President
On December 31, 2024, Speaker Abba will lead a delegation to formally present the funds to President Tinubu. The House emphasized that the donation is exclusively for assisting vulnerable Nigerians in need.
This initiative underscores the commitment of the lawmakers to addressing the pressing challenges faced by citizens during this economic transition period.
