Barely 24 hours after the dissolution of its Executive Committee in Enugu State over persistent factional crises and internal disunity, the All Progressives Congress (APC) has announced that Governor Peter Mbah will officially join the party on Tuesday, October 14, 2024.

The APC’s National Working Committee (NWC) had earlier dissolved the Enugu State Working Committee, citing “prolonged factionalization” that had crippled party activities in the state. In its place, a seven-member caretaker committee was appointed to stabilize the party’s operations.

The newly inaugurated caretaker committee members include Dr. Ben Nwoye (Chairman), Fidelia Njoeze, Peter Chime, Oby Ajih, Chiedozie Nwafor, Emma Ekeh, and Eugene Odoh (Secretary).

Speaking during the committee’s inauguration in Abuja on Friday, Dr. Nwoye revealed that the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Enugu State is facing imminent collapse as Governor Mbah prepares to lead what he described as a “massive political exodus” to the ruling APC.

According to him, Mbah’s defection will be accompanied by all 260 ward councillors, 24 members of the Enugu State House of Assembly, National Assembly members, and the entire PDP State Executive Committee.

“Political evangelism has started,” Nwoye declared. “We went to the governor, and he has agreed to move with us into APC. He is not coming alone; he is coming with the whole structure of Enugu PDP. Where Enugu goes, the South East goes. Never again will opposition dominate our region. Governor Mbah has transformed Enugu in two years. Now he will anchor APC’s Renewed Hope Agenda in the South East.”

If confirmed, this defection will mark the end of the PDP’s 25-year dominance in Enugu State and could significantly reposition the South East within Nigeria’s ruling political coalition.

The APC National Chairman, Prof. Nentawe Yilwatda, who inaugurated the caretaker committee, urged the new Enugu leadership to consolidate what he described as a “historic political realignment.”

“APC is home for all. The person who came yesterday, today, or tomorrow has equal rights,” Yilwatda said. “Our goal is simple: to expand, to win, and to deliver an overwhelming victory in 2027.”

Also speaking, the Deputy National Chairman (South) of the APC, Emma Eneukwu, said Governor Mbah’s defection marks a turning point for the South East.

“We will no longer play second fiddle. With Enugu in APC, the South East has found its voice again,” Eneukwu said.
