The Osun State Government has declared a 24-hour curfew in Ifon, Ilobu, and Erin-Osun communities following the escalation of communal violence. Governor Ademola Adeleke directed security agencies to strictly enforce the curfew and restore peace in the affected areas.
According to Osun State Commissioner for Information and Public Enlightenment, Kolapo Alimi, the curfew, effective March 22, 2025, aims to prevent further loss of lives and property.
Governor Adeleke has ordered the immediate deployment of a joint security task force, including the Nigerian Army, Nigeria Police Force, Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC), Nigerian Immigration Service, NDLEA, and Amotekun Corps. The task force is to maintain a 24-hour surveillance in the affected communities and ensure strict compliance with the curfew.
Tough Stance on Perpetrators
The governor warned traditional rulers in the warring communities, stating that any monarch who fails to restore peace will face suspension or removal. He also announced plans to arrest and prosecute key perpetrators of the violence, summon ringleaders for interrogation and require them to sign a peace undertaking, and enforce cybercrime laws to prosecute individuals spreading false or inciting information online.
Governor Adeleke condemned the communal clashes, describing Osun State as a land of peace and harmony that must not be destabilized. He expressed sympathy for victims of the violence and assured residents that perpetrators will face the full wrath of the law.
The governor also alerted security agencies to potential political sabotage, accusing opposition elements of attempting to ignite crises in motor parks, sponsor fake protests, and cause instability in the state.
Security Agencies Pledge Commitment
At a high-level security meeting, attended by service commanders of the Nigerian Army, Police, DSS, NSCDC, and Amotekun, the officials pledged to implement all security measures and restore lasting peace in the affected areas.
The curfew remains in effect until further notice, with authorities urging all residents to comply for their safety.
