Gbadebo Rhodes-Vivour, the Labour Party’s 2023 governorship candidate in Lagos State, has voiced strong criticism of the economic reforms spearheaded by President Bola Tinubu’s administration. Speaking on Politics Today on January 2, 2025, Rhodes-Vivour argued that the reforms benefit only those close to the corridors of power while ordinary Nigerians bear the brunt of the hardships.
In his New Year broadcast, President Tinubu acknowledged the economic struggles Nigerians face but expressed optimism for the future. His administration has implemented policies such as the removal of petrol subsidies and the floatation of the naira, aimed at addressing systemic economic challenges. Despite these measures, many Nigerians have decried the rising cost of living and called for adjustments to ease their burden.
“Extravagance Amid Hardship”
Rhodes-Vivour highlighted the disparity between the government’s promises and the realities facing the populace.
“Over 70% of people’s income is spent on transportation and food. Accommodation is almost unaffordable,” he said, describing the economic situation as unsustainable.
He criticized the culture of wastefulness and extravagance among government officials, claiming that the benefits of the reforms are concentrated among bankers, government insiders, and associates of the President.
“How many Nigerians can say they are benefitting from any reform right now?” Rhodes-Vivour questioned.
The reforms have sparked widespread discontent, with many Nigerians urging the government to reconsider its approach. While Tinubu has assured citizens that better days are ahead, the divide between policy intentions and their impact on the masses remains a contentious issue.
As debates over the reforms persist, Rhodes-Vivour’s comments reflect the growing frustration among Nigerians seeking immediate relief from economic hardships.
