Ibadan Tanker Explosion

A fuel tanker exploded in a fiery blaze along the Ibadan Expressway in Oyo State on Tuesday, sparking widespread panic and causing a significant traffic gridlock between the Oremeji and Olorunsogo axis.

As of the time of this 9am News report, no casualties have been officially recorded, but the inferno was still raging, with flames and thick smoke billowing from the site.

The Oyo State Fire Service confirmed that emergency responders were promptly dispatched to the scene.

In a phone interview with our correspondent, Akinyemi Akinyinka, General Manager of the Fire Service, said:

“Yes, a tanker is on fire near Sumurah, between Olorunsogo and Oremeji. Our response team is already at the scene.”

Eyewitnesses said the explosion occurred around midday, immediately igniting surrounding areas and forcing motorists to abandon their vehicles.

Firefighters were seen battling the flames as motorists and residents kept a safe distance. The extent of property damage remains unknown, and officials are yet to confirm the cause of the explosion.

Traffic officials have cordoned off the affected stretch of the expressway, redirecting vehicles through alternate routes to ease congestion. However, major traffic delays persist as of Tuesday afternoon.

Authorities are advising commuters to avoid the area until the fire is brought under control.
Nearby businesses and homes have also been urged to evacuate or remain indoors as a precaution.

This latest explosion adds to a growing number of fuel-related incidents across Nigeria, raising fresh concerns about tanker safety, road regulations, and the need for stricter enforcement.
