Breaking news: Floods devastate Borno State, displacing thousands and destroying landmarks. President Tinubu directs immediate aid for victims.
Borno Floods

Breaking news: Violent floods have swept through Borno State, submerging several towns and forcing thousands of residents to flee their homes. The flooding, caused by the collapse of water channels from the Alau Dam, has hit Maiduguri, the state capital, hardest. 9am news Nigeria reports that this is the most severe flood the area has seen since 1994, with many citizens displaced.

The devastating floods have destroyed significant landmarks, including the palace of the Shehu of Borno, the Lagos Bridge, the University of Maiduguri Teaching Hospital, the Central Mosque, and the State Specialist Hospital. Eyewitnesses have captured overhead views of the flood covering multiple streets in the city, forcing businesses and schools in five communities to come to a standstill.

Residents are evacuating with basic items to safer areas, while some youths build sandbag barriers to stop the water. Borno State Emergency Management Agency (SEMA) Director General, Barkindo Mohammed, called the situation “terrible,” adding that he and his staff were trapped while assisting victims.

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has directed the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) to provide immediate assistance to flood victims, as reported by 9am news Nigeria. Vice President Kashim Shettima also visited Maiduguri to assess the damage after attending the 17th Annual Banking and Finance Conference (CIBN).

In addition to Borno State, severe flooding has also affected Kaduna, displacing 1,000 people, as reported by 9am news Nigeria.
