Flooding Worsens in Ondo As Rain Displaces Okitipupa Residents

Flooding in Okitipupa, Ondo State, has displaced residents and submerged houses after heavy rainfall. Locals appeal for improved drainage systems
Okitipupa flooding

Residents of Okitipupa in Okitipupa Local Government Area, Ondo State, have been left stranded and homeless after three days of torrential rainfall submerged homes and disrupted daily life.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that major communities like Erinje, Omawa, Kuneyin, Apata, Igbodigo, and Ayeka are worst affected, mostly due to poor or blocked drainage systems that worsened the flooding.

Many residents, speaking to reporters, described the situation as devastating, lamenting that blocked drains filled with waste like plastic bottles and nylon bags forced water back into their homes.

Ganiyu Akinfenwa, who lives in Erinje, said flooding has long troubled the area because of a lack of proper drainage. “We’ve appealed to the government for help many times so that erosion can flow freely during heavy rains,” he said.

Tosin Akindolire from Apata added, “In our case, the drainages were blocked with waste, causing water to overflow into our homes. We need the local government to clear these blocked drains immediately.”

Catherine Ebisemiju, a resident of Omawa, noted that commercial activities have been heavily impacted as shops remained shut and residents could not go about their businesses during the downpour.

Michael Orogbemi from Igbodigo said ongoing road construction has compounded the problem. “The new roads and drainages are causing water to overflow into our houses. We plead with the government to speed up construction to help us,” he said.

9am News report confirms that local businesses across Okitipupa have seen significant losses in the last three days as people remain stranded in flooded homes.

Chairman of Okitipupa Local Government, Andrew Ogunsakin, confirmed the incident and said the council secretary had already visited the affected communities.

“We have assessed the situation and can assure residents that quick government intervention is underway to clear blocked drains and prevent further flooding across Okitipupa and its surroundings,” Ogunsakin said.
