The Federal Government of Nigeria has approved a new digital identity verification service by the National Identity Management Commission (NIMC) to make it easier and safer for individuals and institutions to verify identities using the National Identification Number (NIN), 9am News report confirms.

The announcement was made in a statement by Kayode Adegoke, NIMC’s Head of Corporate Communications, on Tuesday in Lagos. Adegoke revealed that the Presidency has directed all Ministries, Departments, and Agencies (MDAs) to adopt this NIN Authentication service for official identity checks.

According to NIMC, this initiative supports its core mandate of providing a secure and reliable digital ID system for all Nigerians and legal residents. The newly introduced service, called NINAuth, is accessible via web, mobile apps, and API integration. It enhances data protection, safeguards personal privacy, and simplifies access to both government and private sector services.

Adegoke explained:
“This move supports President Bola Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda, which is focused on improving national identity management across Nigeria.”

NINAuth is now the official platform for real-time verification of NIN records. It introduces robust privacy protections, requiring user consent before any data is accessed for purposes like Know Your Customer (KYC), SIM registration, passport applications, tax filing, and financial transactions. It will also be used in government support schemes, driver’s licence renewals, and various official processes.

Adegoke highlighted that the NINAuth application is built to be secure and flexible, featuring single sign-on capability and API compatibility for seamless integration with existing systems. It offers significant benefits, including enhanced security, data protection against unauthorized access, and empowering individuals with control over their data-sharing preferences.

“This service reflects NIMC’s commitment to strengthening identity verification systems in Nigeria,” he added.

The launch of NINAuth underscores Nigeria’s progress toward a more secure and unified digital identity ecosystem, which is key for better service delivery and compliance with national policies.
